Who are the Cardiff Devils?

The Cardiff Devils are a professional ice hockey team based in Cardiff, Wales. The team was formed in 1986 and has a long and rich history. The team was founded to allow the newly built Wales National Ice Rink (WNIR) a team to play there. Cardiff played their first game at the WNIR on November, 30th 1986 in a 32-0 humiliation of the Ashfield Islanders. In their first year in the third level of the UK Ice Hockey pyramid, the Cardiff Devils went undefeated drawing only one game.

The team's early years were marked by success, and by 1990 the side had reached the premier level of UK Ice Hockey. However, the Devils struggled in the 1990s and early 2000s, facing financial difficulties and on-ice struggles.

In the 1990s, the Devils experienced a period of success, winning several trophies and establishing themselves as a dominant force in the EIHL. One of the key figures during this time was Gerad Adams, who took over as head coach in 1997 and led the Devils to several championships. Adams was known for his tactical mind and ability to get the best out of his players, and his impact on the team was significant.


During 2010s the Devils had a rocky start to the decade which seen their existence threatened. Although, a takeover fronted by Todd Kelman as GM in 2014 seen a change in fortunes for the Devils. With former player Andrew Lord at the helm the Devils were dominant in the second half of the decade winning back to back leagues titles. 


The Cardiff Devils have had a number of talented players wear their colours, Brad Voth, who iced 7 seasons for the Cardiff Devils, and Charles Linglet, who put up a massive 75 points in the 18/19 season. Recently, Devil’s fans have been wowed by players such as Cole Sanford and Trevor Cox.


Off the ice, the Devils have a dedicated and passionate fan base that supports the team through thick and thin. The Viola Arena, the Devils' home rink, is a noisy and energetic place with Block 13 creating a boisterous atmosphere inside the arena. 


In recent years, the Devils have continued to be a force in the EIHL and have made an impact in Europe, featuring regularly in the Champions Hockey League and reaching the Final of the IIHF Continental Cup. Whether they're competing in the regular season or the playoffs, the Devils always bring a high level of excitement and passion to the rink.


The history of the Cardiff Devils is one of perseverance, success, and a strong connection to the community. The team has overcome challenges and continues to be a major force in British ice hockey.
