The Fife Flyers, based in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, is a professional ice hockey team with a rich and storied history. Founded in 1938, the team has been entertaining fans and competing at the highest level of British ice hockey for over 80 years. The Flyers iced their first game October 1, 1938 against the Dundee Tigers.
In the early years, the Fife Flyers established themselves as one of the top teams in Scotland, winning multiple Scottish National League championships. Their first taste of success came in when the Flyers won the 1939/40 Scottish National League title. After a stint in the second tier of professional Ice Hockey in the UK, the team became a part of the newly formed Elite Ice Hockey League in 2011, the EIHL brought together the top teams from around the UK. Despite facing stiff competition, the Fife Flyers have remained a staple of the EIHL, although the Flyers have been unable to secure that elusive first trophy of the EIHL era.
The team has had a number of notable players over the years, including Mark Morrison, who iced 10 games for the New York Rangers in the NHL, and Stephen Murphy, who was a tenured EIHL goalie winning numerous titles at the Belfast Giants. Recently, Flyers fans have had star players such as Shane Owen and Jonas Emmerdahl produce success for the Fife faithful.
Fife play their home games at the Fife Ice Arena, which holds 3000 spectators split between seating and standing. The historic Arena has been the home of the Fife Flyers since their inception in 1938. The compact arena, when filled, can create a unique and loud atmosphere.
Off the ice, the Fife Flyers have always been an important part of the local community in Kirkcaldy. The team has a strong identity and has become a source of pride for the Kirkcaldy and its residents.
